Academics/School Update of Events

June Graduations

The 2020 JICHS Virtual Graduation was June 8, 2020, at 7:00 pm. The in-person Diploma Awarding Ceremony was last Saturday, June 13, 2020, at 8:00 am. Only two attendees were allowed per graduate. The event went very well.  I think we did the best job we could to maintain a safe environment for all those who attended. I would like to thank Angela Childs-Kindred for planning three graduations.

I allowed summer graduates to walk on June 13, 2020 if they completed the necessary course work by June 12, 2020, at 3:00 pm.

Prom

Prom is canceled at this time until it is safe to have one. Based on the interest level, we may plan an event during Homecoming or invite the graduates to next year’s Prom. Prom for next year is scheduled for April 24, 2021.

Summer School

Summer school for seniors is from May 27, 2020, through July 15, 2020. Summer school for underclassmen is scheduled from June 3, 2020, through July 15, 2020. Due to the school closure and possible equity and access issues, we have decided not to charge any students for summer courses. The cost to the school is less than a few thousand dollars.

Back to Work Plan- Summer

The school has been open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday. This will also be the case through the summer.  Staff are able to come to work or work from home, at times, with approval from their supervisor. We will continue to follow the safety guidelines developed by Mr. Edwards and CCSD Safety and Security Department.

Note: Currently, the public is not allowed in CCSD schools through June 30, 2020.

Retirement

We had a virtual retirement celebration for our retirees on June 5, 2020. We had six retirees this year with 151 years of experience in education. We will miss them, and we wish them the best luck in their future endeavors.

SMSgt Terry Ballew- 4 years, ROTC instructor

Mary Byrd- 32 years, Student-Concern Specialist and Coach

Lisa Enfinger- 28 years- Math teacher, coach, Athletic Director

Jake Jurecki- 28 years- SPED teacher and coach (retired military)

Juanita Lafayette- 19 years- Maintenance Department

Kassandra Stafford- 40 years- Art teacher

Human Resources Update

We have filled most of our positions. Our current opening is 0.5 Assistant Band Director, which we are sharing with CRMS. This position was just approved by CCSD for CRMS.

I am pleased to announce that we hired a new Assistant Principal (aka the new Ms. Spann), Archie Temoney from Liberty Hill (1.5 years admin, 10 years of teaching).  We are excited about what he will bring to the JICHS family.

Positions to Consider

Most high schools in the tri-county area have a Testing Coordinator, an Instructional Technology Coach, and a Registrar. Not having these positions places the burden of these tasks on our guidance department and assistant principals, for which we have fewer than most schools per student ratio. We could potentially combine the Testing Coordinator and Technology Coach into one position.

Equity and Access Coach Duty Assignment- like similar duty assignments (admin and math coach), this person would teach one less class per semester to focus strictly on Equity and Access.

Equity Coach

School Safety

The vape detectors are in the process of being installed. They will be ready for the next school year.

School Closure Long-Term Plans (CCSD)

CCSD is currently working on plans to reopen schools for next year. I was a part of the high school subcommittee to create options if we cannot start the school year next as normal. The major issues schools face at this time are the reduced capacity on buses and classrooms due to social distancing guidelines. Most schools could operate at half their capacity given the current guidelines. Our recommendations were taken to the main committee for consideration. CCSD should be announcing its plans by early July.  We all hope we can open schools as close to normal for next year.

May 18, 2020

Dear Charter School Leader,

Today, eight charter schools, four private schools, and the Alliance filed an action in Greenville County, Case No. 2020CP2302596, against the SC High School League to preclude its enforcement of 3 of the amendments adopted in March that would have the net effect of banning most students entering into public charter or private schools after 7th grade for one full academic year.  I have attached the press release that was shared with the media throughout our state.  Please let me know if you get contacted or if you need assistance with the media. We will continue to update you as the case progresses.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully yours,

Carol Aust

6/15/2020 Update

The case has been filed, but so far no decision from the court has been communicated.

Technology Update

  • current technology focus is the retrieval of school-owned devices checked out for distance learning during COVID closures
  • Summer focus will be on cleaning, disinfecting and maintaining the devices that have been returned so that they are ready for use in the Fall
  • Technology is developing options to support shared technology resources as we move into building and construction phases
  • Replacing the antiquated PA system to not only modernize campus communication but to support The school safety plan

Construction Update

We last met on May 21, 2020, to review the final schematic design and see the latest renderings. Around that time I was informed by Mr. McNeil, Executive Director of Capital Projects, that there is a revenue shortage for the project of a few million dollars due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The consensus was to start the CTE of the project on time and delay the gym project until the funds are available. We all agreed that the instructional space is the most urgent at this time. We also agreed that infrastructure for the gym should proceed so that when funds are available the project can proceed immediately. The remaining two projects of Phase IV Capital Projects are both being affected.

Outdoor Classroom- Science

We are exploring the possibility of creating an outdoor classroom for the Science department. Classroom and lab space is an issue, especially during construction. The classroom space could be used by other departments.  (100-105 K)
