Academics/School Update of Events

Prom 2020

Congratulations to Mrs. Quinn, who planned three Proms this past spring and summer. Eventually, she was able to pull off a virtual Prom on July 18, 2020. The Town of JI was kind enough to donate the rental of their Town Hall for the evening. They had about 2,000 online interactions on FB Live and Instagram by students and JICHS families.

JICHS Safe School Restart

According to the state, all schools must provide parents with an in-person and virtual option for their students. However, schools may begin in a temporary remote mode with a safe percentage of students attending schools. Schools must give the parents a 20-day notice of any changes in how the school will operate. DHEC has created three health metrics to track disease activity in each county. They are listed below:

  • Two-week incidence Rate: the number of new COVID-19 cases in the prior two weeks per 100,000
  • Trend in Incidence Rate: increasing, stable, decreasing
  • Two-week Percent Positive Rate

CCSD is consulting with medical health experts from DHEC and MUSC to determine the safe capacity of each school building.  CCSD Board of Trustees voted to start school in-person with no more than 25% capacity at a school. Students not in school will learn remotely.

The normal capacity of JICHS is approximately 1,600 students. If we have to follow the current safety guidelines from the CDC and DHEC, the capacity of JICHS is 950 students.

Current Charleston health metrics.

JICHS Virtual Academy

JICHS has created its own virtual academy. We felt we could provide the best service and support for our students and families versus other virtual options. The deadline to apply for our virtual academy was August 9, 2020. CCSD created its own virtual academy. The deadline to apply for their academy was August 14, 2020. Due to the high demand for a virtual option, CCSD has decided to have each high school manage its virtual option. This is excellent news for us because it allows us to retain our students.

During the week 8/10/2020, Mr. Gilbert, with help from the assistant principals and department chairs, rebuilt the master schedule to incorporate the virtual academy course requests. Mr. Gilbert has already grouped our students into A or B groups if/when a hybrid model is needed. We are able to offer nearly all core content area course requests. In consultation with the Guidance Department, Department Chairs, and based on what is practical, we can offer a variety of electives for the virtual academy to meet our students’ needs.  All courses, whether in-person or the virtual academy, will be run through Canvas, which is our Learning Management System (LMS). Students and parents have one place to go for all courses. Specifics about the JICHS Virtual Academy are in the link below.

JICHS Virtual Academy Course Offerings

JICHS Virtual Academy Expectations

Due to changes in the master schedule, teacher workdays were adjusted. Additional teacher days may be moved before the school year (trade days).  Adjusted days: 8.11, 8.17, 8.19, 8.25, 8.27, probably 9.3, 9.4.

Canvas- Learning Management System (LMS)

Canvas is the new LMS for the entire district. One goal all schools had for this year was to have LMS for parents and students. There was consistent feedback from parents that all the different platforms used last spring were extremely confusing. All JICHS will use Canvas to manage their courses. Canvas is used in many colleges and universities, including the Citadel. The feedback received from staff familiar with the platform is vastly superior to Google Classroom and better than other LMS’s. A few of the benefits of Canvas are listed below.

  • Communicates with PowerSchool
  • Easier to communicate with parents and students
  • Used across CCSD
  • User-friendly interface
  • Tech support
  • Student grouping options
  • Increase teacher collaboration on course developments

Fact and Fee- Distribution 8.25-8.28 (excerpt from Back to School Letter)

In preparation for the upcoming school year, we have scheduled Fact and Fee and Device/Textbook pickup days at JICHS between August 25th and August 28th based on grade level. Students and/or parents are encouraged to pay fees at home through the RevTrak link on our website beginning August 21st. Students and families may come to the school to use computer resources, resolve any outstanding obligations, check-out textbooks, or other electronic devices on the date and times listed below:

Seniors:  Tuesday, August 25th from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Juniors: Wednesday, August 26th from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Sophomores: Thursday, August 27th from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Freshmen: Friday, August 28th from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM

  • Parking Fee.  Pending board approval on how school will begin, the parking fee will be prorated based on the number of days the school is open for in-person instruction. The amount is TBD but will not exceed $100 for students in grades 10-12. More information will be forthcoming regarding parking application, registration, payment amount, and receiving parking decals.
  • Magnet Bus Fee.   Pending board approval on how school will begin, the magnet bus fee will be prorated based on the number of days the school is open for in-person instruction. The amount is TBD but will not exceed $200 for students who would like to ride the West Ashley / Johns Island bus and who have completed the bus application on the JICHS website. If you currently have a seat on the bus, you will receive an email from Mrs. Doane (jodyann_doane@charleston.k12.sc.us) with instructions.

Coffee Talk/Town Hall Meeting TBD

The Administrative Team and Leadership Team are planning a Virtual Town Hall meeting for parents to answer parent questions or concerns leading up to the school year’s start.

Student Testing

Due to Act 142, all 9th-grade students must do MAP testing within the first 10-days of school. They must also take a MAP post-assessment in December. This act passed to receive federal funds related to the Coronavirus.

CERT

We will be administering the CERT tests to the 10th and 11th grades for the 20-21 school. CERT is a college readiness tool that we use to help our students prepare college entrance exams. Data from these tests help us track our charter goals.

Draft Temporary Remote Schedule- JICHS (skip)

This is a draft schedule for a temporary remote model that our Leadership Team will vote on if started remotely. The schedule closely follows our regular bell schedule—the periods broken down into 45-minute blocks to allow for more individual feedback or help from teachers. The Wednesday schedule incorporates Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)components, more individual assistance time for students, and additional planning time for teachers.

Human Resources Update

FFCRA Update

This act was passed in April. It provides up to 80 hours or two weeks of leave related to COVID-19. There are six reasons listed to be eligible. It is referred to as eFMLA. This may be used one time.  Staff is eligible for up to 10 additional weeks of leave through FMLA. We are doing our best to work with staff to minimize the number of staff that may need to take leave. Teachers and Guidance Counselors have had the option to telework through September 4, 2020, with the expectation that we are ready for students in-person starting September 8, 2020.

Six Qualifying Reasons

1. is subject to a federal, state, or local quarantine or isolation order related to COVID-19;

2. has been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine due to concerns related to

COVID-19; Emergency FMLA leave will be available to staff members caring for a child whose school or place of care is closed due to COVID-19 related reasons for a period of up to twelve (12) workweeks. 3. is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and seeking a medical diagnosis:

4 is caring for an individual subject to a federal state or local quarantine or isolation order related to COVID-19, or who has been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine due to concerns related to COVID-19.

5. is caring for his or her child whose school or place of care is closed (or child provider is

unavailable) due to COVID-19 precautions: or

6. is experiencing any other substantially similar condition specified by the U.S. Department of

Health and Human Services.

Technology Update

  • Preparing technology for classroom instruction
  • Redo the master schedule to accommodate the virtual academy requests
  • Onboarding of new devices (Chromebooks, Mifi, webcams)
  • Preparing for distribution of devices to students

Safety Update August 2020

  • Vape detectors are installed and operational.
  • 3000+ disposable face masks have been ordered and are at JICHS.
  • 2 Thermal imaging temperature check tablets, one for each entrance.
  • Social distancing signage has been ordered and will be placed around the campus.
  • 450+ sheets of plexiglass are on campus for classrooms and offices where it is difficult to social distance.
  • Every teacher and student will receive a JICHS Mask.
  • The nurse’s area will have plexiglass shields and extra protective equipment (N95 masks, Isolation gowns, face shields).
  • There will be a designated room (basketball concession stand) away from the rest of the students and faculty to isolate any person with COVID-19 related symptoms while waiting for their guardian to pick them up.

Construction Update

  • Tr 7 (TMD) and Tr 4 (We Care) will be used at the start of the school year. Eventually, these programs will be relocated to new trailers by the visitor grandstands of the stadium.
  • The CTE project is on schedule to be completed by December of 2021.
  • The gym project is on hold due to a budget shortfall. A penny sales tax funds the construction. Due to the pandemic, less revenue was generated.
  • Outdoor Science Classroom- see renderings and budget.
