PERFORMING ARTS:

CTE:

  • Congratulations to Andrew Pennington who was selected to represent Charleston County School District as the CTE US Presidential Scholars nominee. Andrew's application has been forwarded to the State Department of Education for consideration. State Superintendent Molly Spearman will be allowed to submit only a total of 10 male and 10 female applications for the General Component category and only 5 additional CATE student applications to Washington for consideration on November 25, 2020.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

  • Law Ed - Mr. Davis: “One of my Law Education students, Cameron O'Donnell, is participating in the "Students for Restorative Community Circle " (Panel Discussion) with CPD officers and some members of the football team. They are basically building on the idea of community policing and CPD is trying to make inroads with local high schools by getting to know students and their thoughts and concerns about policing in our community.”
  • AP US History - Ms. Howard: “We completed timelines on the American Revolutionary war and I wanted to share my favorite two with the BOD.” Example 1 and Example 2
  • Honors Human Geography - Mr. Webster: “We used CANVA to make travel brochures and posters for the different biomes on Earth. This project required students to learn a new online medium to show their learning and understanding in a creative way.” Example 1, Example 2, Example 3
  • AP European History - Ms. Wakefield: “We take our first test next week covering the time period of 1450-1648. In preparation we have been honing our writing skills and learning how to effectively group information to form a cohesive argument.” Grouping/Thesis Activity
  • AP European History - Ms. Wakefield: Students were offered the opportunity for extra credit to attend the Living History Days at Middleton Plantation and were asked to make connections to what we’ve learned in class. Here are some images and descriptions from students.
  • IB Anthropology - Ms. Wakefield: “We have been learning about structural powers, culture and what it means to live in a society. One fun way we’ve analyzed some of these ideas was to evaluate a movie of the students choice and look for the ideas and concepts we’ve been studying in IB Anthro.” Example 1 and Example 2

SCIENCE:

  • In October, marine science (Mrs. Evans) students participated in an oyster reef dissection with scientists from the Department of Natural Resources. The students sorted through oyster shells taken from the marsh to see what other organisms lived in between the shells.

  • Here are some fun brain dissection photos from IB year 2 (Mrs. Lyles) students:

  • IB Year 2 students will be participating in a virtual coral reef SCUBA dive with Marine Lab in Key Largo Florida on Friday, November 13.
  • IB Year 1 (Mrs. Lyles) students have completed 2 virtual case studies that allowed them to assume the roles of an ER physician to diagnose issues associated with chlorine gas poisoning and a Vet Tech to diagnose an issue of a dog that was eating normally but losing a lot of weight. Sample conclusions
  • IB Year 1 students are navigating hybrid learning by ‘zooming’ with remote classmates while performing a cellular respiration lab.

  • Upcoming:  Earth Science (Mrs. Lyles) students will be participating in an oyster bag dissection with DNR scientists in December.  These students will also participate in a virtual lecture with Old Santee Canal Park about the history of indigo in S.C. followed by a tie-tying lab using indigo.
  • Upcoming: Next Wednesday, marine science (Mrs. Evans) will be having their annual discussion with high school students from Ockero, Sweden about their local marine environment and comparing it to our own.

LIBRARY:

  • The December Project Lit book will be Born a Crime by Trevor Noah.  Project Lit combines social action with reading and community involvement.  Sometime in December we will be having an activity/discussion with students, faculty, admin, and community members, and we invite board members to take part.  Please email amy_ball@charleston.k12.sc.us if you are interested.

ROTC:

  • On October 24th, ROTC cadets participated in a roadway trash cleanup project on Dills Bluff Rd on James Island wherein approximately 100 pounds of trash was collected for proper disposal.

  • On October 30, an all-female cadet ROTC Color Guard performed the opening ceremony for our Homecoming game against Bishop England.

School Leader Report

Presented by Mr. Thorn

Academics/School Update of Events

Hybrid Model

The hybrid model continues to run smoothly. Students have been extremely compliant with our COVID-19 expectations (three W’s- Wear a mask, Watch your distance, Wash your hands). Student arrival and lunchtime continue to go well. Students are following expectations in these unstructured settings with minimal redirection needed.

Learning Center/Study Hall

We are allowing hybrid students to come to school on their off days. Students and teachers may coordinate their schedules so students can attend class in-person if there is space to do so. If there is not space during a class period then the student will report to the learning center or study hall in the cafeteria, where they will participate in the lesson remotely.

Virtual/Remote/In-person Requests

Parents and students in the hybrid model that request to remain remote must get admin approval. Parents must commit to remote learning through the winter break and then after that through the first semester.

2nd Semester Virtual/In-person Request

In early December, parents will be given the option of in-person instruction or Virtual Academy for second semester. Selecting the Virtual Academy is a semester commitment. As a school, we are allocating teacher sections or FTEs to the Virtual Academy. We are essentially running two different schools. Switching between the Virtual Academy is completely impractical. It requires replicating the students schedule in the in-person model which is nearly impossible. The request creates capacity issues and jeopardizes the students’ chances of earning credits.

JICHS COVID-19 Dashboard

According to our Covid-19 dashboard, we had four positive cases in November, two virtual and two in-person. In September and October, we had two positive cases respectively, 1 in-person and 1 virtual. According to contact tracing, the positive cases were not attributed to attending school.
