Two 11th-grade IB students, Hayden Groeschel (Year One IB Contender) and Jackson Cowart (IB Global Pathways), spoke during Public Comment regarding their recent IB field trip to volunteer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SC DNR). They shared their experiences participating in marsh grass planting and oyster reef cleanup and described the service opportunity as both educational and rewarding. The students also expressed their interest in promoting the IB program and encouraging greater student involvement.
The Board was invited to visit the Culinary Arts Lab, where Chef Shepherd’s Culinary II class, with assistance from students in the Culinary I class, prepared and served a meal. Culinary II students Stephen “Tripp” Mizzell and Makenzie Mahan served the Board. The menu included shrimp étouffée, greens, Moroccan carrot salad, and fresh apple crisp.
Both Tripp and Makenzie responded to questions from Board members with enthusiasm and professionalism, expressing appreciation for the knowledge and skills they have gained through the program. Chef Shepherd also presented a slideshow highlighting classroom activities, including visits from local chefs and field trips that provided students with additional hands-on learning opportunities.
