Public Forum

Our Public Comment period is for members of the public to address the board. Each member of the public may sign up to comment at the meeting and will be allotted two minutes. The board will listen, but may not directly respond to any comments.

  1. Young Life spoke about volunteering at JICHS.

KM Consulting

Presenting JISCH monthly Finacial Statement. ~Per pupil increased from 6,576 to 7,196. The projected budget was totaled from the first number. The overall budget was increased. ~high school supply line was increased ~LD increased for the Charleston Mental health extra day. ~Board line - a legal fee was added ~Athletic/Feild trip supplies was increased

Leadership Report

Presented by Leadership Chair Sheli Ballard. ~This semester the leadership team will begin the process of updating the JICHS policy manual to reflect the goals, practices, and policies in our updated charter document. ~The Media Center is hosting a USC Librarian Intern who is currently working collaboratively with several teachers. We love interns so we stay current on trends in the profession. ~Ms. Ball attended a regional workshop for librarians for updates on statewide initiatives involving school libraries. Check out the senior all-star posters in the hallway! ~This is the first year we have had an opportunity for pre-IB 8th grade students from around Charleston County to shadow pre-IB and IB students. ~JICHS is offering incentives for students who spend 3+ hours practicing or preparing for SAT or ACT outside of school. For each 3-hour block (verified with documentation), students may earn homework passes or extra points on quizzes. ~Charlotte Guthrie and Nick Velasquez were chosen out of thousands of students who auditioned in SC ​to perform in the 2018 SC All-State Chorus. ~Art club is working on getting a plan together to propose to leadership about possibly doing inspirational and motivation quote paintings on the walls in the girl's bathrooms around the school.

~Individual Sports Reports: Boys Basketball Varsity Boys are 6-8 and 3-4 (5th) in Region Play. JV Boys are 2-6. Girls Basketball Varsity Girls are 6-8 and 1-5 (7th) in Region Play. JV girls are 5-4. Wrestling Have one week remaining before Region and Lower State Tourney Volleyball Hailey Ryan was selected to the High School Sports Report All-State team

~Athletics Facilities update:

  1. Game fields had rye put down and have been fertilized.
  2. Drainage is done for Baseball concessions

Upcoming Events: ~Feb 7th the District will be honoring all of Charleston County College Signees at the District office. ~Varsity Basketball at home Monday and Friday. 3 weeks left in Regular Season. ~All other Spring Sports will start their seasons January 29th

~Concerns:

  1. Field Space for Spring Sports Practice
  2. Lockers for Girls Softball
  3. Booster Club numbers (Possibly talk about in Executive Session)

Principal’s Report

Presented by Mr. Thorn Charter Application Update ~The charter application was submitted to CCSD before break. The application has been sent away for review. Once returned, we will be informed of any revisions or adjustments that are recommended. Bob Olson, Executive Director- Charter School Liaison, will inform us how CCSD will handle the approval process. Annual Report ~The Annual Report was submitted to CCSD before the break. We did not apply for accreditation through SCDE.

Calamity Days ~CCSD Board of Trustees is voting publicly tonight to forgive three of the day's snow from winter storm Grayson. CCSD has applied SCDE to forgive the fourth day. All employees less than 240 days have been given credit for the days. 240-day employees will work with their supervisor to make-up the missed time.

School Choice Application ~The School Choice Application has been active since January 10, 2018. The deadline to apply is February 10, 2018. We are coordinating our magnet bus applications with the March deadline for parent’s school choice so that they can make an informed decision. ~Second Semester Open House- January 25, 2018 High School Information Night ~February 1, 2018, from 6:00-7:30 pm. The event will begin in the PAC with a brief address by me and introductions of any board members that may be present. Student ambassadors will be giving tours. Departments and clubs will be set up in the Cafeteria to distribute information and answer questions. Testing ~March 7, 2018- 11th-grade students will take the ACT (276) or the SAT (76). 9th and 10th-grade students will be taking the Pre-ACT. Seniors will be in an advisory. Seniors are encouraged to job shadow or go on a college visit. Career Assessment- Under procurement. The test is typically given in early April to 11th-grade students.

~Friday, January 19, 2018. We hosted a meeting with public servants of James Island community. The meeting was organized by Stephanie Spann, Assistant Principal. Purpose: To answer questions, as appropriate, regarding a social media post during the weekend of January 13 and have a productive conversation about how to help our students move through this incident and issue. I was a very successful roundtable.
