February 22-23 Safety Concern Summary

During 7th period and after school the administrative offices (120 and 123) spoke to handful of students and parents about a vague threat of two sophomores shooting up the school at noon. SRO Brown was involved throughout the process. All names of potential witnesses to the threat were contacted. No names or details of any kinds were discovered. At that time, it was determined that there was no credible threat to the school and a callout was not necessary. Later in that evening, CPD and CCSD began getting phones calls about the vague threat. Central Investigators went to several students’ houses to investigate the posts on social media. Again, no leads were discovered. The school and police department determined that no credible threat existed. However as the rumor spread over social media, the school decided to do a callout to the students, parents, and community to reassure them that was no credible threat to the school and that added precautions would be in place for Friday, February 23rd. On Friday 23rd, we had between 8-10 police officers on campus at any given time. On Friday morning, the school released a detailed update on the safety concern. The school day proceeded as normal. On Monday, February 26, random students were wanded as they arrived at school. Tardy Sweep was postponed until 8:15 am because of the delay caused by the wanding.

School Safety Update

  • Code Red Drill is being planned in the next couple of weeks (quarterly lockdown drills).

  • We continue to employ two full-time police officers, an SRO and an off-duty officer, five administrators, and four Student Concerned-Specialist (one more position is posted, but has not been filled).

  • School safety is a running agenda topic at every staff meeting.

  • Reinforce school climate issues- IDs must be worn at all times. No hats, hoods, or earbuds are permitted during the school day (earbuds at lunch only). Students who fail to comply will be considered a level 2 violation- Refusing to Obey (ICE, OSS, confiscation of items).

  • NEW- Random Searches: wanding during student arrival, classroom, and student vehicles. The wanding and the searches are meant to be a deterrent. Police must be present for the random searches. At least one police officer must be present when wanding is being conducted.

In accordance with S.C. Law and in an effort to prevent students from bringing weapons on campus, schools may conduct periodic, random weapon searches of students and their property while on campus.  All searches will be conducted with the safety of the students and staff in mind.

  • NEW- STOPit App (See handout). The STOPit App is another mechanism for students and parents to report bullying, cyberbullying, violence, inappropriate student-teacher relationships, hazing, drugs/alcohol, self-harm, and any issue which can negatively impact the learning environment.

    About Wake Up Carolina

We are a movement of South Carolinians who have joined our efforts to fight substance abuse, the terrible scourge that is ravaging our cities and destroying our families. We have witnessed too many senseless deaths, crimes, and overdoses of our children and neighbors. We know that the problem is only getting started and will become worse if we don’t take action. We are a movement resolved to end substance abuse in our communities and we are growing in numbers.
