School Leader Report

Presented by Mr. Thorn

Academics/School Update of Events

30-minute Extended Advisories in September

  • Erin’s Law- state-mandated training to assist in protecting and educating students on child sexual abuse. The adopted CCSD curriculum web resources for secondary schools can be found here: https://safersmarterteens.org/

  • Achieve3000 Level Setting- every year students need to do a level set in this platform.  Achieve3000 is a blended learning platform that measures a student’s Lexile level. The platform then differentiates assigned articles so that students can increase their Lexile level.

CERT for Schools

CERT is our new college prep testing platform that allows students to take ACT style tests three times a year.  The individual tests are taken online in their core content area classes. The students get their results immediately. The program has valuable data on student and group performance. CERT provides remedial instruction to students through researched-based, instructional video lessons. One school reported over a three-point improvement in their composite scores.  Most core-content area teachers will use CERT for their SLO (Student Learning Objective).

Walkthroughs

This year admin will be doing many walkthroughs. Each admin is to conduct walkthroughs for 2-3 assigned  departments per month. At a minimum, we will do at least one walkthrough for each teacher per month. Ideally, we will do 2 or 3 per teacher each month. This is considered a best-practice for administrators. The walkthroughs will not be used for evaluative purposes. Walkthroughs are intended to foster collaboration and a team approach with the admin and teachers.  As I have said many times, the highlight of our day is when we get the chance to be in classrooms seeing our teachers and students in action. It reminds us WHY we are here.

9/19 Fall Open House (rescheduled due to Hurricane Dorian)

The Fall Open House went well. The Jazz Band performed in the main courtyard for the first 30 minutes. The parent attendance appeared lower than normal. This is probably because it was rescheduled, and we had several away athletic events. We offered the teachers comp if they stayed. If they were at Open House they were allowed to leave at 2:00 pm on Friday. Our teacher attendance was still not was high as I would have liked to see. We will work on this for next year.

Staff Attendance by the numbers

83 Certified Staff/113 total = 73.5%, 12 CS Coaches, 83/99 = 83.8%

9/20 Early Release Day

This was work time for teachers. Ms. Ballard was available for SLO support.

9/30-10/5 Homecoming Week

9/28 Homecoming Dance

9/30-10/4 Theme Days- Meme day, Holiday, Cowboys vs Aliens, Blue and Orange

10/1 Swag Night- tie-dye shirts after school

10/2 Senior Crown decoration during ILT

10/4 Pep Rally

10/4 Varsity Football vs Stratford

Independent Learning Time (ILT)and Structured Learning Time (SLT)

So far ILT has gone well. The lunch lines are empty halfway through. The second kiosk still has yet to be used due to staffing issues with CCSD. The students have been well behaved, and the level of trash left behind, according to Marty, appears to be better than last year.  Progress Reports come out on September 25. Students who receive a grade of 65 or less will be required to attend SLT. The schedule for SLT is listed below. If the student’s grade does not improve then an academic progress meeting will be held with the student, parent, administrator, guidance counselor, and teacher(s). Together we should be able to find a way to help the student make progress.

SLT Help Days:

Mondays & Fridays = English and Social Studies

Tuesdays & Thursdays= Math and Science

Wednesdays = Electives

Enrollment Update

 as of 9/20/19- TOTAL: 1524

Durham Busing

Busing has improved tremendously. Mr. Drake keeps a log of all late buses, am and pm. Office 120 has helped a great deal with Durham consumer service. Ms. Cromedy, the JI Bus Manager for Durham/CCSD, has an office in 120.

JICHS Strategic Plan

The Leadership Team and subcommittees are working on an action plan for each charter goal. The goal is to have a working draft by October 21. At that time, we would like to invite at least one board member to be part of each subcommittee. If all goes according to plan, we might be able to get the Leadership Team and BoD approval by November 18.

Technology Update (Gilbert)

The new school year is off to a running start. The faculty thanks the board for supporting the instructional programs with technology that enriches the learning environment and experiences of our students.  The focus thus far has been on providing technology hardware and support that improves communication between instructors and students. Extending hardware options for needing assistive technology. Providing service that allows instructors to gain accurate base-line data to sharpen instruction in areas of individual academic needs.

Construction Update (CTE and Comp Gym, JI Bus Lot, Practice Field Project)

We have not had a formal meeting since last May. I expect a construction meeting will be scheduled soon. Through informal conversations, CCSD is making all three projects part of one master project. This will reduce the costs and making it easier to get OSF approvals.

Board Elections

Our board election process began on September 16. The deadline to apply is September 27. The board elections will be on October 8&9. New members will be sworn in at the October 21, Board meeting. We have three parent seats and one community seat open. https://www.ccsdschools.com/domain/1659
