Leadership Report

Presented by Leadership Chair Sheli Ballard.

LEADERSHIP TEAM:

  • The leadership team is excited to be back to tackle the spring semester!  A few things we are working on:
  • JICHS held all day PD for faculty & staff including topics in CRT, data, technology, school safety protocols, and instructional practices.  Faculty also attended a number of great sessions through CCSD and BCSD.
  • We are currently reviewing action plans for each chart goal.  This is our 2nd check-in to ensure we are making appropriate decisions based on our progress.  Some points of interest:
  • Charter Goal #1 --
  • UBASA held an HBCU College Fair on Feb 20; a career fair will be held on Feb 26.
  • AVID Cohort visited TTC to learn about expectations for finance, academics, 7 admissions.
  • Charter Goal #2 --
  • JICHS offered PD and resources for using GT & enrollment data to make appropriate course recommendations.
  • The program of studies has been revised to dissuade “gatekeeping” and to encourage more students to challenge themselves through rigorous coursework.
  • Charter Goal #3 --
  • JICHS is providing monthly PD and faculty discussions on CRT -- this is coordinated with the Equity & Access committee
  • The AVID program is beginning recruitment for the class of 2024 cohort.
  • A subcommittee recommended changes to the JICHS grading policy removing the mandate that teachers change any final grade of “59”.
  • JICHS and CRMS are in the early stages of planning a series of meetings that will allow 8th & 9th grade teachers to collaborate and plan vertical articulation of courses to smooth the transition of incoming freshmen.

IB:

  • JICHS IB Program hosted 75 rising 9th grade pre-IB students during our pre-IB Shadow Days (Jan-Feb).  Small groups were led by our IB student ambassadors and shadowed a variety of classes during 1st and 2nd block.
  • IB International Global Exchange Spring Program will return to Prague, Czech Republic April 3- April 10, 2020 where 13 of our pre-IB and IB students will participate in Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)  experiences with other IB students from around the world.
  • The IB program has sent out 133 pre-IB acceptance letters to rising 9th grade students throughout CCSD . We will continue to accept pre-IB applications throughout the CCSD Choice Application process.
  • The Full IB seniors have just wrapped up their Extended Essays and are currently meeting with their supervisors for their exit meeting.
  • IB Courses have expanded to include IB Social Anthropology, IB Computer Science and IB Global Politics (starting next year and beyond).
  • IB Environmental Science and IB Biology students will be traveling to Key Largo in March to conduct research at MarineLab.
  • Our Image Editing, Animation and Web Design classes, through Perkins Funding, received Certiport licensing for our students to take the Adobe Certification Associate Exams at the end of the semester. These exams are rigorous but the result is a national certification for each student who passes the exam.

LIBRARY:

  • The library is hosting an exhibit by Leonard Freed, a photojournalist who covered John's Island, Harlem, the Berlin Wall before and after, and other topics.  Please take a look at the photographs along the windows before you leave. The exhibit is courtesy of Backpack Journalist and Linda Dennis.
  • Congratulations to Hillairy Brown, Charity Scruggs, & Michele Johnson for an awesome Project Lit / UBASA HBCU fair!  Our students took the lead in presenting and preparing for these events.
  • Our IB Biology class, led by Ms Lyles, read scientific papers published by a biologist from Oregon State who studies the speciation of orcas.  They followed this up with a google-hangout session with Dr. Pitman.

VISUAL ARTS:

  • We have lots of events & shows going on now and coming soon!March is Youth Artist Month! This is a nationwide month long event across thousands of schools. There will be a wide variety of interactive art activity stations around the school for students and faculty to promote the arts!
  • 7th Annual JI Arts Silent Art Auction and Juried Student Art Competition will be held March 7th from 5-7:30. Come out and support our island Art classrooms and teachers, as well as local artists!
  • Charleston Artist Guild's Extraordinary Art Exhibit exclusively for Charleston students with a variety of disabilities will be on display in the Charleston County Public Library on Calhoun Street for the month of March, with a reception on March 28th from 1-2 PM!

PERFORMING ARTS:

SOCIAL STUDIES:

  • Social Studies teacher, Jennifer Wakefield held a PD session this past Friday. The Flipped Classroom -- showed teachers, especially AP/IB and Honors teachers, ideas on how to flip their classroom. For AP, with so much information to go through, flipping my classroom allows for more meaningful time in class for activities and in-depth discussions. Additionally, with helpful online tools, my class is much more immersive
  • Social studies teacher, Coach Hilyer's 1st and 4th block students wrote letters to either one of the state's two U.S. Senators or to First District Rep. Cunningham. Many wrote letters about raising minimum wage, but one student wrote about the DACA/Dreamers program because she is one of those students. She wrote about how her family is trying to find private sources of college funding because she is currently not eligible for federal financial aid. Overall I was very pleased with the quality of the students' letters and hope they receive a response from their Senator/representative.
  • Social studies teacher, Nolan Davis has his Law Education students wrote letters to either a state Senator or state Rep to teach them about civic duty in a republic. They will pick a bill or topic to research and then write a letter voicing their opinions on a variety of current issues.

ROTC:

  • Over the last month, JI's ROTC unit participated in a JROTC competition hosted by Ashley Ridge HS and a JROTC Field Day event hosted by Fort Dorchester HS. Our cadet brought home two trophies from the former and one from the latter. On 2/20/20, 18 cadets attended a "Cadet Career Day" hosted by Joint Base Charleston. The cadets were provided opportunities to discuss and ask questions of representatives from multiple career fields and all branches of the military.

PE:

  • Health and art students teamed up to present a painted guitar to MUSC’s Children’s Cancer Center.

Class Choice

This is a new platform that allows students to register for their classes for next year. Teachers are still encouraged to do teacher recommendations. Students are able to see all classes that are qualified to take, even if they have not been recommended. This feature removes unnecessary barriers for students, which supports all of our charter goals (access and equity).  We have held grade-level assemblies and counselors have visited advisories to help the students with the process.
