Leadership Report

JICHS Leadership Team Report

20 April 2020

LEADERSHIP TEAM:

  • The LT mobilized immediately upon notice that schools would be closing for virtual learning.  Since March 13th, we have overseen & implemented a number of changes concerning instruction and curriculum issues:
  • Each teacher established a comprehensive virtual learning plan that provides a framework for instruction, communication, & progress monitoring.
  • Each teacher has modified the remainder of course curricula to meet the new instructional needs of students in a virtual setting and under special circumstances.
  • Department heads, administrators, & the instructional coach have shared and/or delivered various PD webinars on various technological resources:
  • Edgenuity, CERT, Flipgrid, Google G-Suite Apps, SmartMusic, Zoom, Khan Academy, effective virtual learning strategies
  • The LT established and approved an abbreviated instructional daily schedule along with a plan for direct instruction of previously learned as new content to prepare students for subsequent courses next year.
  • The admin team established a system for identifying and notifying dis-engaged students using existing human resources (classified staff members) with the goal of ensuring that all students have access to learning.
  • The admin & technology teams have created systems and opportunities for access to technology:
  • The distribution of Chromebooks and personal hotspots for students without reliable access to technology
  • The creation of a central technology helpline (via Google Voice phone app) so families may communicate technology needs
  • A schedule of days/times when the campus may be safely accessed to procure resources for families and staff

In all, JICHS faculty and staff are aiming above & beyond minimal state & CCSD mandates to continue instruction for our students.  In addition, the plans of the LT as well as those of individual teachers have placed students’ social-emotional and academic needs at the forefront.  JICHS has really come together to provide meaningful content and to foster integral relationships to make sure that all students receive individually appropriate instruction for the remainder of this school year.  This has been an educational experience for us all and because of this unexpected situation, JICHS will be better prepared to use virtual instruction to complement our physical brick & mortar practices in the future.

Academics/School Update of Events

School Closure

As of 4.20.2020, school is closed through April. The closure of school is made by the Governor. It is not a local decision. As a school and district, we find out what is going to happen next on live TV. We are prepared to finish the school virtually if necessary.

South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE)- State Superintendent Molly Spearman

The areas of focus at the high school from the SDCE is for every student to matriculate, for seniors to graduate on time, and for seniors to experience Prom and Graduation.

CCSD is working with the North Charleston Coliseum for possible later dates for graduation ceremonies. Mrs. Quinn, JI Prom Coordinator, has already rescheduled Prom for May 30, 2020. She has contacted the Gaillard Center for possible additional dates if needed.

3rd Quarter and 4th Quarter Grading Update:

The State Department of Education continues to share updates that  impact how the extended school closure impacts education resulting from COVID-19. The biggest change will be how Semester 2 grades will be averaged. There will not be a 4th Quarter grade or grades for final exams. The semester grade will reflect work completed and mastery demonstrated during the second semester but will not be reported as two separate grades.

eLearning Update

eLearning has gone amazing well. The overwhelming majority of the credit needs to go to the teachers, students, and parents. This is certainly an unprecedented time for all of us. The closing of the country, and consequently school, is difficult on everyone. Many people are dealing with health and/or finance concerns. Administration continues to stress to teachers to not put too much stress on families. I think our staff has been very proactive with students and parents. Teachers are more than willing to work with any students just as long as they have some type of contact. I have stressed to them, if they take one step towards us then we will take nine steps towards them. So far, admin has only received a handle of complaints from parents. Those complaints were either about lack of communication from the teacher or too much being assigned. The communications issues were addressed. In terms of assigned work, the parent or student had not reached out to the teacher. We are constantly stressing to families to communicate with your child’s teacher. The solution will always involve the teacher and student, just as it does when we are at school.

eLearning Support

CCSD Learning Services has created multiple websites with resources to support teachers with eLearning. Mrs. Ballard created an outline for teachers to set-up a virtual classroom. She has provided regular professional development sessions for teachers based on their feedback.

JICHS Intervention- Weekly Student Participation/Engagement Update:

Our team of Student Concerns Specialists and Office Personnel reached out to students that were referred through the Non-Participation form. Check out the “4-3-20_Contacts” tab of the JICHS Student Services Sheet to see the results of those phone calls and emails.

Building Access

Complete Cleaning is spraying our building, including outbuildings, over the next three days.  This disinfectant kills viruses such as the flu and coronavirus. They are able to spray the building again before we all re-enter at some point. Therefore, the building will be accessible at scheduled times going forward. The dates and times are below. Take care of what you need to and leave as soon as you can.  Please practice social distancing and other recommendations from the CDC. All staff MUST enter and exit through the front atrium doors!

JICHS eLearning Instructional Day- April 13, 2020

The Leadership Team approved the eLearning Instructional day that is listed below. I think the consensus was that this schedule provides the necessary structure for students and teachers to continue eLearning for as long as needed, while also allowing flexibility for them.  For full disclosure, we “stole” it from Stall HS. That is what we do in education, we “collaborate” or, in other words, we don’t reinvent the wheel. This instructional schedule will begin after Spring Break. Please post your additional office hours in your Google Classrooms.

JICHS eLearning Instructional Day

10:00 - 11:00 1st Period

11:00 - 12:00 2nd Period

12:00 - 1:00 Lunch

1:00 - 2:00 3rd Period

2:00-3:00 4th Period

If applicable, please follow the A/B days for your classes. The A/B days are in PowerSchool and on the JICHS Master Calendar on Google Calendar. This A/B schedule for this week is below.

Purchase Requisitions (PRs)

We have worked on an updated protocol for PR’s so that we can continue doing business. Ms. Chisolm gets our mail from the post office. She has access to building whenever she needs. Due to her efforts, we have been able to pay our bills during this time.

School Choice Update

As a result of mandated school closures due to COVID-19, the 2020-2021 CCSD School Choice decision notification and confirmation dates have been adjusted to the following dates:

  • Decision Notification Date - April 17, 2020, beginning 5:00 pm (Tentative)*
  • Notification of decisions of acceptance or waitlist status will be emailed to guardians and will be reflected on the guardian’s account dashboard in the applicant portal. It may take several hours for all decisions to be posted.

  • *Acceptance decisions for the Charleston School of the Arts (SOA) will be released after all applicants to SOA have had a reasonable opportunity to complete an audition for programs applied. Applicants to SOA who have not completed their audition will receive an opportunity to complete their audition through a virtual process in order to maintain social distancing guidelines.

  • Seat Acceptance Deadline - May 8, 2020, 7:00 pm  (Tentative)*
  • All seats will be auto-declined within the final acceptance timeline. A reminder notification will be emailed on May 7, 2020, 24 hours prior to the acceptance deadline, to applicants who have not confirmed their seat acceptance. Once a seat is manually declined or auto-declined, the seat will be automatically offered to the next applicant on the waitlist.

Technology Update

The Technology Department has done a tremendous job of supporting our students and families during the school closure. Please note the list below:

  • Prepared Chromebooks for distribution, which included a sign-out contract
  • Ordered, configured, and distributed Mifi devices and Chromebooks (post Spring Break)
  • Set-up multiple distribution windows for students and families to sign-out Chromebooks
  • Created a tech support hotline through Google Voice

4.3.2020 Virtual Fire Drill (just for fun)

Construction Update

We have not met since the last board meeting. However, Cumming and Quakenbush have continued to work in preparation of breaking ground this summer.

Finance Update
