Technology Update

The following are hardware recommendations for the 20-21 school year.

(1)  To continue working towards a 1:1 classroom set of devices appropriate for the main curriculum in the classroom.

To that end:

(A) We recommend the purchase of an additional 500 Chromebooks in two phases.   Summer 2020 - 250 for Fall needs and a November 2020 - 250 for Spring needs ($125-130 with carts)

(B) We recommend the purchase of a set of 30 laptops for more intensive courses. ($45K $1500 per)

(C) The media center is the intersection of all courses and offerings.  The need for 35 modern desktops is essential for the needs across the curriculum.  ($70K Under $2K each))

(D) maintenance and repair needs to move upward to $30k - more devices = more service and repair

(E)  Projectors, presentation systems ($50 K)

(F) Teacher Station replacement including floating teachers ($30K - $2k per)

(2) With storm outages and age we will need to replace some of our backup power sources - prices vary.

(3) CTE not covered by Perkins or other funding sources

(4) Special Ed assistive technology

Leadership Report

Presented by Leadership Chair Sheli Ballard.

LEADERSHIP TEAM:

  • The leadership team is focusing on closing out the school year as efficiently as possible.  Teachers are wrapping up their curricula this week; next week will be essential for students to complete outstanding assignments.
  • The social studies department will conduct virtual PLCs in early June to familiarize themselves with the newly adopted SC standards for those courses.
  • The AVID site team is currently finalizing student applications and interviews to select our new class of 2024 cohort!  We have 32 applicants (and 6 applicants for consideration to join the class of 2023 cohort).

ROTC:

  • I am happy to report that contact with both active and reserve cadets in SC-922 has found most all of them thriving and adapting well during the COVID-19 shutdown. Unfortunately, the shutdown prevented our unit from having its scheduled tri-annual inspection by our national AFJROTC headquarters back in March. Our HQ directed that no cadet group activities be held until further notice and our adapting to all closure protocols denied cadets participation in several anticipated events this semester. However, before the closure occurred, our cadets were able to accomplish enough community service activities/hours and other actions to be recognized as one of 50 AFJROTC units to receive the AFJROTC Outstanding Organization Award for the 2019/2020 school year. Our unit's annual awards ceremony was cancelled. Underclassmen will receive their awards earned early next semester at a yet to be determined date/time. Our senior cadets that earned awards this year are going to receive theirs in the next couple of weeks, one-on-one, after coordination with their parents. Of our thirteen cadets that completed four years in the ROTC program, six have already or soon will be enlisting in the US military, three will be attending senior ROTC at their respective 4-year college they will be attending, and one received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Senior Parade May 17, 2020, at 12:30 pm

A parent of a senior, Angie Ducker, worked with the Town of James and Charleston County Police Department to organize a parade for our seniors on May 17, 2020, at 12:30 pm starting at JICHS. I would personally like to thank Ms. Ducker for planning this event for our seniors. Organizing a parade is no small undertaking. For this to work, everyone must adhere to social distancing rules and to the guidelines established by the Charleston County Police Department. Please read the attached memo from Ms. Ducker for directions and guidelines.

Yearbook Distribution

Yearbooks will be distributed in June. Shipping had been delayed due to the COVID-19 shutdown. More info will come out later. If you wish to purchase a yearbook, please visit www.jostensyearbooks.com. There are only a few left.

Senior Checkout May 18 & 19 (started today)

The schedule for senior checkout is below with the suggested last name breakdown of the senior class. There will be two arrival windows on each day. For safety reasons, please do your best to follow the suggested alphabetical breakdown. We will have various stations set-up to collect school items (textbooks, Chromebooks, etc.), distribute senior recognition items (graduation cords, NHS Graduation Stoles, etc.), clear student obligations/fees, and a photo option for seniors and their parent(s) or guardians. A stage will be set-up to resemble our typical graduation. Parents can take pictures of their graduates on stage with their cap and gown. All stations will be set-up outside with social distancing guidelines in place. Seniors may come alone or bring up to two parents or guardians. Seniors and parents are expected to stay together the entire time with only one family per station at a time. More details regarding senior checkout will be emailed to seniors and their parents and posted on our school website and facebook page later this week.

In-Person Diploma Awarding Ceremony

CCSD is asking all high school principals to announce a plan and/or date for In-Person Diploma Ceremony by May 26, 2020. JICHS is targeting dates in late June.

Underclassman Drop-off and Pick-up- Week of May 26, 2020

Underclassman drop-off and pick-up is scheduled for the week of May 26. This will be by a drive-by system that is set-up in the front of the school. We will designate a day for each grade. Staff will follow the district safety guidelines for the collection and distribution of materials.

Employees Soft Return to Work (CCSD and Mr. Edwards)

We are following CCSD guidelines for a soft return to work. Starting on May 18, 2020, essential staff will be permitted to work. At this time, essential staff are administrators, select support staff members, and Maintenance. The building offices will be open from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. No parents or students are allowed in the building without permission from an administrator. The state is allowing essential student and parent meetings such as special education meetings. All district guidelines must be followed.

During the last two weeks of their contracted year, teachers will be allowed to come to work on an A/B schedule or every other day. This will allow them to complete their grades and pack-up for the summer. Special accommodations will be made for teachers that are being relocated or displaced.

Summer School

Summer school for seniors is from May 27, 2020, through July 15, 2020. Summer for underclassmen is scheduled from June 3, 2020, through July 15, 2020. Due to the school closure and possible equity and access issues, we have decided not to charge any students for summer courses. The cost to the school is less than a few thousand dollars.

School Closure Long-Term Plans (CCSD)

Just an FYI- The district has created a committee to work on medium and long-term plans should this pandemic continue through the summer and into the next school year. We are hopeful we can start the next school with relative normalcy, but they are planning for all scenarios.

Athletics and SCHSL

Working in conjunction with Dr. Postlewait, Superintendents, our attorneys, and SCHSL, we received a written response from the SCHSL stating that it considers JICHS to be a part of CCSD and will be treated as such. That means all incoming freshmen from outside our attendance zone will be eligible to play immediately. This is an incredible win for students and parents in Charleston County. Parents of student-athletes are to use school choice as intended by CCSD
